How videos get in
Filmroom is a library of 939 track and field videos: 398 community picks and 541 from coaching-education channels. Nobody at Filmroom picks individual videos. Athletes and coaches recommended each one on Reddit, or a coaching-education channel published it, and the site ranks them by how many people recommended them. The idea comes from Andrej Karpathy's HackerTube, which does the same for videos recommended on Hacker News.
The inclusion rule
A video is in Filmroom if one of these holds:
- At least 2 different people recommended it in the communities listed below.
- One person recommended it and the community agreed: their comment reached a score of 10, or their post a score of 25. Posts need more because self-promotion usually arrives as a post.
- A coaching-education channel on the list below uploaded it, and it is a how-to, coaching talk or technique analysis, not an advertisement for a camp, course or product.
A video is left out if more people disputed it than recommended it, if it is shorter than 20 seconds, if it is not about track and field or running, or if its uploader does not allow it to play outside YouTube.
A link counts as a recommendation when the person points others to it: "watch this", "this helped me", or a video given as the answer to a question. Sharing news, asking about a video and criticizing it do not count. An uploader linking their own video never counts.
Ranking
Each person who recommended a video adds 1 plus log₂(1 + the score of their best comment about it). Ten upvotes adds about 3.5, a hundred about 6.7, so a single popular comment cannot outweigh several people. People who disputed the video subtract half of the same weight. Coaching-source uploads that nobody has recommended yet rank below every community pick.
The home feed shows how-to videos, coaching talks and technique analysis, ranked the same way, and never puts two videos from the same channel within four places. Races, training footage, documentaries and interviews are one tap away under their own filters.
Sources
These communities count. Choosing them, choosing the coaching channels below, and keeping the home feed to teaching videos are the only editorial decisions in Filmroom.
| Community | Links | Videos |
|---|---|---|
| r/trackandfield | 486 | 278 |
| r/Sprinting | 847 | 232 |
| r/highjump | 63 | 12 |
| r/Shotput | 21 | 8 |
| r/Hurdles | 13 | 5 |
| r/triplejump | 1 | 1 |
Being added: r/AdvancedRunning, r/CrossCountry, r/athletics, r/UKAthletics. Their history is still being collected, and they count once it is complete, so a half-read community never tilts the ranking.
Coaching-education channels: World Athletics, USA Track & Field, USTFCCCA, England Athletics, Athletics Australia, Athletics Canada, Scottish Athletics, ALTIS. National federations, coaches associations and coach-education programs, chosen because they teach coaches for a living.

What the model does
A language model (Gemini Flash) reads each video's title and description and the comments that link it. It labels the event, the topic, the level and the kind of video, writes the one-line summary, and marks each comment as a recommendation, a mention, a dispute or self-promotion. The rule above, not the model, decides what gets in. The comments themselves are on every watch page under "Why it's here", so you can check the label.
Limits
- The track communities on Reddit talk about sprints and distance far more than throws and jumps, so those events have fewer community picks.
- Popular is not the same as correct. Disputes are shown, but a video many people liked can still teach something a coach would change.
- Recent videos have had less time to collect recommendations, so they rank lower at first. The Recently recommended filter helps.
- Forums outside Reddit, such as LetsRun, are not included yet.
Download the dataset
The full ranking is free to download: every video id with its labels, recommendation counts, score and the links to the Reddit comments behind it. YouTube's terms do not allow redistributing titles and other video details, so the file has video ids only.

Privacy
Filmroom has no accounts. Your history, likes, Watch later and playlists stay in this browser's storage and never reach a server. Videos play through YouTube's privacy-enhanced player (youtube-nocookie.com), which YouTube says does not store viewing information until you play a video. Clearing site data removes everything.
Filmroom is not affiliated with YouTube, Google or Reddit. Videos remain on YouTube under their uploaders' terms. Back to videos
