Middle distanceRacing and tactics

Pacemaker Tom Byers wins the 1500-meter race at the 1981 Bislett Games after the pack refuses to follow his pace.

Billed as a WR attempt with just about everybody who was anybody(except Coe),including current WR holder Steve Ovett,USA miler Byers, there to pace the field through a fast time set off perfectly.Unfortunately everyone else got lost in a tactical race and he just kept going! Even Ovett's famed last lap kick couldn't quite catch Byers, who came home for a deserved victory and instant sporting fame.

What commenters say. Recommended as a classic example of a pacemaker staying in the race and winning after the competitors ran too tactically.

On “Pacemakers bridging the gap to competing ”

The simple answer is because that’s what they’ve been paid to do, and they are only prepared to run the prescribed distance and pace. That said, it’s not completely unheard of for pacemakers to stay in the race. Tom Byers was entered as a rabbit in a 1500 race at the Bislett Games in 1981, and after none of the elite miles took to his pace, he kept going and finished first. The pacemaker of Galen Rupp’s 10,000-meter American record attempt in 2014 stayed in the race after his work was done, and set a PB while doing so.

link to this video Oslo 1981. They ran "tactically" and just ignored the rabbit who continued to win the race.

Not anymore. They changed the rules after Tom Byers won the 1500 at the Bislett Games in 1981. [video
