SprintsRunning form

Dwain Chambers demonstrates how to develop a faster arm swing and maintain good rhythm while sprinting.

This is the final chapter in this segment of Track and I training tips. In this episode we'll look at how to develop a faster arm swing as well as maintain good rhythm. Video production: dluxfilms.com/ Venue: visitleevalley.org.uk/go/lee-valley-athletics-centre/ web: www.chambersforsport.com

What commenters say. Recommended as a great resource for learning how to properly swing the arms and reduce tension during sprinting.

On “Feels fast looks slow :( any advice u would give. Sorry abt the bad angle and being so far.”

The best advice I'd say is to try and keep those arms a little closer to the body. I can't exactly tell from the angle, but it looks like you're sweeping from side to side. Instead, try to focus on throwing your arms behind you and that should translate to a better acceleration. This video here is a great link to this video I used myself to learn how to properly swing my arms. It might help you as well from a great sprinter named Dwain Chambers, you may or may not know him. Best of luck.

On “Block start review?”

…high your heel comes off the ground. You'll have to pause and unpause a bunch of times to see these things since it's not slow motion, but it's visible. Your armswing is also a little tense. While it's good to have short levers, your run reminds me of a football player who's been told to actively swing their arms. This video might help you: [video Second clip: Your first 4 steps are better in in terms of heel elevation, but the fifth step still comes down flat footed.…

On “80m sprint (recording from 40-60 slow mo) keep it muted, because the audio is cursed.”

Are you running from Diddy? You'll need to improve your form to ensure the best chance of escape. Firstly, your arm swing is a bit too tense, especially on the front side. Here's a video that demonstrates this well: [video Secondly, you're too slow. Try maintaining a forward lean for longer, and extend your acceleration phase itself for longer in the beginning. Dropping your shoulders will also complement your forward lean, in the sense that it helps you coordinate your arm swing with your acceleration. Without coordination all these mistakes are possible: hunching forward, hinging forward, arching back, stiff upperbody. In your case I think you can see the stiffness in the arm carriage…

On “Do stronger arms make you faster”

…ater part of the race and over development can increase fatigue by added weight and uptake. but it would odd to think the bench press or pushups is going to increase your deadlift. Bit of bro science but if chest useless in sprinting why do sprinters train it. Here's a few sources that could help prove my points. Performance Lab of California link to this video Lance C. Brooks et. al "findings suggest that when arm motion is restricted, compensatory upper body motions can provide the rotational forces needed to offset the lower body angular momentum generated by the swinging legs. We conclude that restricting arm motion compromised short sprint running performance, but only marginally." https:/…

On “Overstriding”

A. It looks a little bit like your free-leg hip is dropping down. You also run with a lot of adduction (knees are close together), but not also the internal rotation you would expect when looking at top sprinters: [video (Example). B. Your arm swing is held out in front of you, with some asymmetry and also more side-to-side movement than ideal: [video (Arm swing) C. The knees are too low and your recovery strategy is to kick your shin out in front of you, which suggests over activity in the rectus femoris as oppose to driving with your primary hip flexor (psoas muscle). Exercises: 1. Side-ways sit-ups to develop obliques 2. Abductor/Adductor machine 3. Shoulder shrugs (\~30% o…

On “What can I work on, and what's going well?”

Well I meant that fixing the foot problems will lead to better achilles usage, because the foot muscles will be able to receive energy and transmit into the achilles. Yes, your elbows are coming past your ribs and the arm is held extended vs tuck in to your chest. Here's two examples: 1. [video 2. [video I would improve your forward lean by doing sit-ups and lat pull-downs, but practice never hurts. Accessory exercises are key in sprinting. You don't want any weak links in your kinetic chain

On “How does my acceleration look pt. 2 (no toe dragging)”

My analysis: I would say that you tend to land very far in front of your hips which creates braking forces/prevents acceleration. -> [video \+ [video (Just watch every youtube short and video from this channel to be honest) When you land, your heel is relatively low to the ground, which partially is because you are running on grass but overall creates vertical as opposed to horizontal shin angles. You run with something of a hip hinge, but because you are overstriding you are not actually creating much velocity in each stride. Compare to someone like Asafa Powell, who ran in a more hip hingey style, he still gets better shin angles and is more underneath his center of mass. ->…

On “Critique?”

…en see your wrists/forearms start to extend (wrist is bent upwards) instead of having a more neutral profile. This could point to weakness in the grip and wrist extension muscles, the biceps and triceps, or muscles closer to your core such as the deltoids. Examples: 1. Bolt Video Front view 2. OIP.ahGA8E6CORZCfJhVwpoA4wHaE8 (474×316) 3. [video (Similar perspective as your video. Noah Lyles' left leg is straighter compared to his right, which is more externally rotated. Still, you can see when he recover his leg from back-side to front-side, he's not keeping his toes pointed out, but is fairly straight and both medial and lateral hamstrings are pulling evenly to keep the foot/s…

On “Sprint Form Help/Critique”

Think you arms are going too high up remember what your arms to your legs follow if you legs are in the air for too long that time being wasted this explains it better from a old gb sprinter link to this video

Your left arm is too straight, so we can train biceps, triceps, posterior deltoid, and lats Drills: 1. Bunny/pogo hops to train keeping the heels elevated, range of motion in the toes: [video 2. Static arm swing (swinging arms in place): [video 3. Sled push (no weight) to emphasize head movement: [video . Although if you look up videos of people doing sled pushes, everyone does them without moving their head so maybe it's not the best drill.…

On “any tips for my first step it feels slow and unexplosive”

Hey just some advice drive you knee all the way up you want to get as much ground as possible first push out as well as keep your foot as low to the ground as possible also don’t come up to quick think Of the block start like a plane on a run way your not trying to scare or wake up the passengers so you slowly rise and Here are some vids this yt channel give great advice link to this video link to this video Also here one on a swing out of the blocks link to this video Hope this helps
