Coach Vince Anderson explains that great relay exchanges depend primarily on the quality of acceleration from both sprinters.
Q: WHAT MAKES A GREAT RELAY EXCHANGE? A: Great accelerations by both incoming & outgoing sprinter. When analyzing 4×100 exchanges, evaluate the quality of the accelerations by the incoming and outgoing athletes. When the passer and receiver merge perfectly, passes might be ruined by sloppy eye-to-hand baton work, but that is rarely the case. When bad passes happen and when they are missed entirely, it is usually because one or both athletes botched their acceleration, causing them to crash into each other’s space. Any outgoing acceleration must meet two strict criteria to be acceptable. The acceleration must be of maximal intensity AND also be strictly on time (initiated within the 80-90 centimeter bandwidth allowed upon the incoming athlete hitting the takeoff mark). Failure to execute both requirements results in a failed acceleration. Cure the acceleration deficiency and the pass gets cured.
