On “Slow mo start, does anyone have any input?”

…t of the blocks. * **keeping your butt lower** - your butt is pretty high in the air in the blocks. Having that back leg close to straight means you can't push as hard with that leg, reducing your power output. It's kinda like bending your legs while dribbling a basketball * **work on your stride** - check out this video and compare it to yours: link to this video ... your feet hit the ground to early... focus on a "bounciness" to your stride. Work on cycle running... This is a drill where you link high knees and butt flicks together at a fast turnover rate. Keep on your toes and focus on the finish Good luck!…

On “Please Critique my form.”

I don't know why, but to me it looks like you're not stepping quickly enough during your accelerating phase. Also, you're not lifting your legs nearly high enough on the drive forward, which is severely impeding how much power you can transfer through your steps. Watch this to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Specifically, watch how high they bring their rear feet when driving their legs forward. You're bringing your feet up, but not high enough. Like you, though, I feel really nitpicky about these corrections. You're right that something is off, but I feel like it's probably several minor things rather than one glaring mistake. Do you have a coach that can watch you and make on-t…

On “Advice on how to perfect my start!”

The first 45 seconds of this video is the starting bible: link to this video Some things to note: -His hips move forward. Never up, never down, straight. -look at the hang time. See how long he's in the air? See how, even after his lead foot comes off the block his other leg is still lifting? He's not bringing the trail foot up yet. There's a whole bunch of time where he just "hangs" in the air. The start is a jump, it's not a regular sprint stride. -see that back ankle? See how it's pressing backwards? That's because he's applying force through that leg. It's a two leg start, not a one leg movement. -see how the foot extends? Your lower limbs should also be applying force. Use those calf mu…

On “Form check?”

Regarding the comments telling you to bring your arms to a 90deg angle, I really don't think there is a need for you to do that. If you look at this and this , the pros don't maintain this 90deg angle, so just keep doing what you're doing with the arms. Just my 2cents thou

On “Hey guys, I had my first track meet yesterday and I just wanted to share my 100 with you guys. What do you guys think about my form? Im pretty small (165cm) and my start/reaction time is still pretty slow but I think I might be able to get a low 11 if I improve the start and my reaction time.”

You should be on the ball of your foot, not your toes, watch slow-mo videos of elite sprinters running like this link to this video

Random questions about thigh flexibility and recovery period in between sessions Hi all! I have two random questions. **First question:** How well are you able to close your knee under your own power? As in, without grabbing your ankle to stretch your quads, how close can you get your heel to your own butt with just using your hamstrings? With my thigh directly perpendicular to the ground, I can only get to about 90 degrees under my own power (whether due to hip flexor inflexibility, or a lack of hamstring strength). In this video, you can see that nearly everyone can touch their butt with their heels(though not necessarily deliberately) as they cycle through (though not necessarily wit…

On “Road to National Gold #12, New chapter, 9 weeks into off-season training”

If your heel recovers too far behind you it is a bad thing but you want your foot to recover as close to the underside of your bum as possible without touching it in order to have a shorter lever when the leg swings under and around. What you said about most sprinters feet recovering just over the knee but not right under the bum is not true. Go watch any slow mo video of an elite sprinter running at top speed, their foot will almost hit their bum, and in some cases it will hit it. Usain Bolt is the best example of this.

On “Frame by Frame Form Review”

no. you want your foot strike to be down AND back. you want to go forward, so Newton's 3rd law, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, which means you must hit the ground down and back to make the ground apply force to your center of mass to go upward AND forward. if you look at side motion slow mo video of world class sprinters, their lower leg opens up forward as their knee extend almost straight, and then they whip at the hips so that the entire leg swing down and back towards the ground. On “Advice on the Block Starts?”

Great job on the extension. But you're cycling too fast and your trailing leg (forward in the start) is coming *up* instead of forward. First ~45s of this video is (I believe) Asafa Powell: link to this video The biggest takeaway from this is to see how long he spends floating. You may not be able to float that far yet, but it's the idea that you're "jumping" out of the blocks, not spinning. It's not a sprint stride. The legs should never come upwards during a start. It's a much more linear motion than upright. Imagine trying to sprint up stairs or a steep hill. Your ankle isn't going to be kissing your ass on the way up. You don't have the time (and it doesn't help) to do that, you need to get…

On “Foot strike on the ground in sprint spikes”

You can see pretty clearly here that Usain Bolt's heels never touch the ground at max velocity. Very few people accomplish this due to things like anterior pelvic tilt, weak anterior chain, weak plantar flexor, or other general poor mechanics and muscle imbalances.
