On “Running my first 100m in 2 years this friday. Anything i can improve in my form?”

Well, I’d run the 100 first before changing anything. After that, it may be judicious to address the amount of hip and knee extension occurring as the leg passes behind the body. The last portion of each stride primarily involves an exchange between the hip extensors and hip flexors. The ankle passively releases energy through plantarflexion. When this is efficiently done, you’ll see little knee extension and a moderate amount of hip extension. This will give you more time and space to load the hamstrings in front of the body and aggressively strike the ground. A good indicator that this is being done correctly is having the knees together at touchdown. One of the most effective drills t…

On “How to Maintain Top End Speed”

Here are some suggestions: 1.Improving stride efficiency when running at max speed. You can do this by using sprint drills and sprinting over wickets. Stride efficiency will help you to stay at top speed for longer. 2. Anaerobic sprints - sprints of 8-15 seconds to train your anaerobic energy system (AES). You use the AES during the last half of the 100m. When you train AES make sure you get a full recovery between reps (otherwise you're training the lactic system) and use distances like 50m - 150m. 3. Don't think about other people during your race. Just keep your eyes on the horizon and focus on running your best. If you're looking at someone passing you, chances are you're going to…

On “Fixing too low heel recovery: is it something to work on or 100% a byproduct of hitting the ground harder?”

First of all your technique out of the blocks is not very good. You basically stand straight up. But then afterwards you are more swinging your legs forward rather than cycling your legs. This prevents you from striking the ground vertically. So then you push more. If you can do some wicket runs on a regular basis they should force you to strike the ground at a better angle and thereby train you to cycle your legs more. It’s hard to swing your legs when doing wicket runs....see wickets here... link to this video

On “Former 'Powerlifter' and total Noob Curious About Sprinting”

Synthetic tracks, grass, or dirt are the best surfaces. Concrete and asphalt are alright for healthy, experienced athletes. What you will need: Open reel measuring tape or measuring wheel: The longer the tape, the better. Get 60-100 meters if you have the means. The wheels are great because they aren’t limited by length, but they’re expensive. If you’re using a measuring tape, you’ll need something to anchor the beginning of the tape to the ground. I use a sharpened stick on grass, my starting blocks on synthetic tracks, and my tripod or a water jug on concrete. 20-30 flat sports cones: These will demarcate distances both as a visual aid and for video analysis. To time sprints with video…

On “Coach seeking advice - Teaching technique and drills”

Wickets are a great way to teach max velocity. Another Vince Anderson concept. I would also look at Altis as an authoritative source for track and field periodization. [video
