Stuart McMillan explains how to use drop-in accelerations to help athletes practice the rhythmically rising phase of late acceleration.
🏃♀️PART 3 ON LATE ACCELERATION Part of our job as coaches is to get across the importance of a patient acceleration, and the next part is to facilitate opportunities in practice for the athletes to practice this. One way we do this is through drop-in accelerations, where we basically eliminate the first part of the acceleration, and just work on the rhythmically rising part. 💡Drop-ins allow us to work more on late acceleration work, as the athletes haven’t had to work so hard through the first few steps to get into higher positions. If these are not a part of your current program, we encourage you to try them out. Aside from CLIMBING, the other way we talk to athletes about late acceleration is through the DRIVE and RISE concept: essentially driving the thighs forward, and raising their torsos and hip height – with every single step – until they are upright. Alternatively, you can encourage them to DRIVE their feet backwards as they RISE their COMs. DRIVE is something – whether it is driving the thighs forward, or driving their feet backwards – that most sprinters do very well with. ⚠️Where many falter is in their lack of patience through the process. They climb out of their acceleration too early – eager to get upright and sprint. This concept of patience is one that many coaches talk about, and was a key thing that Coach Dan Pfaff talked to me about when I first met him in the mid-90s.
