Les Spellman outlines the differences between early and late acceleration, focusing on foot strike and torso position changes.
Early and late Acceleration often gets treated as one thing. In practice, it changes quickly. As Les Spellman outlines in this short snippet from the Team Speed Coach Certification... 🏃♂️ Early acceleration is about the first 4–5 contacts: How you use the ground. Pushing away. Building hip extension. Gradually rising the torso with a piston action. Then the demand changes... 🏃♂️ Late acceleration requires a different pattern: The torso continues to rise, but foot strike changes. You move toward a more cyclical action. Stepping over, striking down, and managing stiffness at contact while still producing extension. That transition is one of the hardest phases to coach. It requires coordinating hip extension, foot strike, and posture as each step changes. 🎯 This is the level of practical detail built into Team Speed. Developed by Stu McMillan, Les Spellman and Danny Foley: • Field application: acceleration, max velocity, change of direction with Les Spellman • Health and performance: tissue quality, readiness, movement options with Danny Foley • Decision-making: how you see and act, led by Stuart McMillan 🧠 Six-month structure 📈 Bi-monthly live sessions led by Megan Young, facilitating calls with Les, Danny, and Stu 🤝 Coaches working through the same problems together The Team Speed Coach Certification starts April 13.
