On “17M Starting Shotput. Any advice would be appreciated”

Start by learning the power throw (also known as a stand throw). This is the basis for all advanced throwing techniques. If you’re able to master this technique (easier said than done), you’ll be in great shape when you start learning to spin or glide. Here’s an excellent video resource to get you started: link to this video The channel that posted that video, Throws University, has a ton of great resources for throwers of all levels. Hope this helps. Good luck!

On “Brand New Track Coach”

…l want to start by learning the power throw. For shot, you typically begin by teaching your athletes how to hold and release the implement. There is a great shot release drill than you can start with where the kids will throw directly into the ground in front of them. This video here gives a pretty good explanation on holding/releasing the shot: link to this video . The only small difference I make to the ground release drill is to throw directly from the neck to get more comfortable with holding the shot there. After you teach the release, you’ll begin teaching the power position. Fortunately, the foot work is mostly the same between shot put and discus power positions. I’d recommend using chalk (…

On “Where can I even begin?”

Start by mastering the power throw. My favorite YouTube resource is Throws University. Here’s a great video they did on the basics of the power throw: link to this video Spend significant time mastering that part of the throw. After you’ve become proficient with the power throw, you can move on towards gliding or spinning. Seeing as you don’t have a coach that seems to actually care, I’d recommend you start gliding. Again, throws university has a lot of resources on this. The drill progression I usually use is power throw, step back drill, and then full glides. Hopefully this is enough to get you moving in the right direction. Good luck!

On “New to Track, looking to do throwing.”

…re a few things I would recommend to help you prepare: 1. Get in the weight room and start getting stronger. Being strong and powerful can overcome some technique deficiencies. 2. Start learning the power throw on your own. Mastering the power throw is the best way to throw far in the future. Here’s a pretty good introduction to the power throw: link to this video If you’re patient and do those two things, you’ll increase your chances of success significantly. If you’re struggling to learn the technique, feel free to post a video asking for technique analysis and the folks around here should be able to point you in the right direction. Hope this helps and best of luck!…
