Dan Pfaff discusses symmetry in return-to-play protocols, explaining why perfect balance is rarely necessary or realistic for elite athletes.

Symmetry in return to play deserves more than a percentage cutoff. When coaches and clinicians talk about 85 or 90 percent symmetry, the question often gets simplified too quickly. As Dan Pfaff explains here, symmetry only has meaning when it is anchored to context. High-level athletes rarely move in perfect balance. Asymmetry exists before injury, often for good reason. Sprinting, throwing, cutting, and striking all create directional demands that shape how an athlete organizes movement. The goal in return to play is not visual neatness. The goal is restoring the athlete to a usable bandwidth that fits their sport, age, position, and history. Dan’s starting point is always the same: • Do you have a movement map from before the injury? • If not, can you work from solid normative data for that sport and stage? • What level of asymmetry is functional, and where does it become a risk? A 15-year-old athlete and a veteran NFL defensive back live in very different bandwidths. Treating them the same creates blind spots. This is the work. Reading movement, understanding tolerance, and making decisions that hold up under speed, force, and fatigue. 🎯 Develop that decision-making skill inside Coaching Eye. Learn how Dan assesses movement, builds baselines, and navigates return-to-play decisions with clarity instead of guesswork. 👉 Coaching Eye enrollment now open. If you want to build that level of understanding and learn how to read movement the way Dan Pfaff does, the Coaching Eye Program is designed for exactly this. You’ll learn how to interpret what the body is doing, identify the patterns that matter, and make interventions that support healthier, more resilient athletes.
